Sustainable Bedding: Here's What You Need To Know

Sustainable Bedding: Here's What You Need To Know
What makes a product sustainable?

A sustainable product is a product that is made with responsible materials, produced ethically, has an efficient life cycle and can be disposed of with minimal impact. For a product to be sustainable, it must be possible to produce and/or consume it in a way that doesn’t result in harm or destruction. If the production of a product requires nonrenewable resources, damages the environment, or results in harm to individuals or society, it is unlikely to be considered sustainable.

A product is usually considered sustainable if it:

  • Doesn’t deplete natural, nonrenewable assets: A sustainable product is made from renewable resources; in other words, resources that can’t be completely depleted.
  • Doesn’t directly harm the environment: The production, distribution, and/or consumption of the product uses as little energy as possible, and minimizes and responsibly disposes of waste. Almost no action is completely free from environmental impact, so most environmentally conscious companies strive to minimize negative impact.
  • Wasn’t made in a socially irresponsible way (for example, forced or child labor and health or safety concerns): A socially sustainable business practices fair and equal hiring, hiring a diverse range of different people and ensuring they have a voice in the organization. Socially sustainable businesses also care about the health, wellbeing, and success of their employees — as well as the residents of the cities and countries in which they operate.

With consumerism and high demand for everything these days, it's hard to choose a sustainable product over the cheaper option that will be shipped faster. A product that is typically looked over for finding sustainable options is bedding and linen. Most people are not aware of sustainable options for bedding and aren't even conditioned to look for them.

There are a variety of different fabric options for bedding including cotton, silk, bamboo, eucalyptus, and more.

Cotton is a natural fiber, but that doesn't make it an eco-friendly fiber. Growing the cotton crop gobbles up 16% of the world’s insecticides. According to WWF, it takes more than 20,000 liters (5,283 gallons) of water to produce just one kilogram (2.2 pounds) of cotton, which roughly equals one T-shirt and a pair of jeans. Now just imagine how much water it takes to create a whole bedsheet set.

SensibleRest

SensibleRest is bedding products handcrafted in Spain. SensibleRest bedding is made with Tencel™, an innovative natural fiber made from the Eucalyptus tree. This unique Smartcel™ sensitive fiber guarantees our products are softer, more breathable, cleaner and more sustainable than cotton. Put it all together and you have moisture-managing, antibacterial, and cooling sheets that remain fresh, even after repeated washing.

While most high-mill companies give priority to quantity over quality, our production process is always backed by our ethical vow to omit the use of harsh chemicals and synthetics. Full transparency is at the core of what we do. When you purchase from SensibleRest, you can sleep soundly knowing you have purchased natural goods that keep you and your family healthy; all while adhering to the well-being of the planet.

We make every effort in our process to not diminish the integrity of the fabric. Refraining from excess bleach or dyes allows us to maintain a texture of higher quality, and pledge longevity in our products. Because our fabrics remain unaltered, you will see a slight variation in color across products.

SensibleRest bedding is not only sustainable, but the company practices sustainable actions as well. Working in partnership with Spanish artisans, SensibleRest was born. Hand-crafted and milled in a zero-footprint, OEKO-TEX® certified environment, our artisans use their years of experience to cultivate products that come from naturally sourced materials. This closed-loop process helps protect the environment and fully aligns with our mission for a healthy and sustainable planet. This process encourages high resource efficiency by recycling water and reusing the solvent, as opposed to other products such as cotton and bamboo which release toxic chemicals into the air and water during their manufacturing process. These toxic solvents are classified as corrosive and cannot be recycled. Every step of our production process is eco-friendly and ultra-sustainable.
